Infinity Reference 6812CF 6"x8" 2-Way Speakers (Pair) Review
What's a guy doing reviewing 2005-year speakers at the dawn of 2011? Simple: Infinity made me buy these. In my research, I discovered that sometime in 2006, some idiots at Infinity made the baffling decision to lower the impedance of all their speakers from 4 ohms to 2 -- a total head-scratcher considering the entire aftermarket car stereo industry has long set the standard at 4. Infinity claims that its speakers are still safe to use with any stereo, but the owner's manual of my Pioneer makes an explicit contradiction, instructing NOT to hook up speakers with less than 4 ohms. I decided to place more faith in Pioneer's words, so instead of buying Infinity's current model 6x8s (the 6832CF), I had to scrounge around the Internet for worn used copies of these long-forgotten units. The end result: an unwanted compromise from my perspective and lost revenue from Infinity's. Lose-Lose.But oh well, I'm happy with what I've got. I've known since the 90s that Infinity speakers have the best sound around (though Pioneer and Polk come close), and that's certainly true of these: crystal clear trebles, sharp midrange, good specs (60 RMS watts, 49-21,000 Hz frequency response, 92 dB sensitivity), and an overall punchy, lively feel to the soundstage no matter what the source. Bass is only average (weaker, in fact, than the factory speakers they replaced in my Mazda 3), but there are no real negatives. The adjustable rotating tweeter is a nice touch.
My only wish is that Infinity come back to it senses, so the next time I buy a car I won't have to be hunting for what will by then be decade-old speakers.
